Alize Sotelo
Alize Sotelo Gutiérrez is a Basque filmmaker, animator and curator working between London and Spain. Born in Navarre, she graduated with honours in Animation from the London College of Communication, University of the Arts London, and was awarded the Ágorart Scholarship from the Government of Navarre in 2020, which enabled her to complete a postgraduate certificate in Screenwriting at Birkbeck, University of London.
Her practice is rooted in the exploration of memory, identity and cultural heritage through animation. She approaches animation as a medium for research-driven storytelling: precise, expressive and formally ambitious.
Alongside her filmmaking work, she teaches animation as an Associate Lecturer at University of Arts London and curates moving image and digital art exhibitions, including the Screen School Showcase at the London College of Communication.
She was selected for the Animation Sans Frontières 2023/24 residency — one of Europe’s leading programmes for emerging animation professionals, supported by Creative Europe MEDIA — where her animated short Ortzimugan was first developed.
Throughout her career she has collaborated with organisations including Miyu Productions, the British Library, Secret Cinema, Disney Concerts and Mesmer Studios. Before dedicating herself to filmmaking, she taught the Basque language at the London Basque Society, where a chance encounter with the story of the Basque children evacuated to Britain during the Civil War would eventually become the seed of Ortzimugan.
