Synopsis
After the bombing of Guernica, seven-year-old Fermín becomes a refugee in Britain, facing the cruel emptiness of exile. Amid this uprooting, he finds refuge for his soul in dance—an invisible thread that anchors him to hope and to his own identity.
Ortzimugan is an animated short film inspired by one of the most moving episodes of the Spanish Civil War: the evacuation of thousands of Basque children to different European countries. Through an intimate, emotional perspective, the project explores childhood in wartime, displacement, memory and art’s ability to rebuild the inner life of someone who has lost everything.

Historical memory and personal storytelling
The film combines historical memory and emotional storytelling to tell a story of loss, survival and transformation. Fermín’s journey is not only geographical: it is also an inner passage shaped by separation, uncertainty and the need to find a new sense of belonging.
Dance appears in the story as a place of refuge, expression and renewal. In a world torn apart, it becomes the space from which the protagonist can preserve his identity and rediscover hope.
