Theatre production

The Mandrake, by Niccolò Machiavelli, was the company’s very first theatre production, premiered in Pamplona on 17 May 2002 at the Patio de los Gigantes.

The Florentine author offers a satire that portrays human weakness through comedy, in a register far removed from his moral writings yet just as eloquent. The staging heightens the buffoonery of the characters and follows the conventions of the Commedia dell’Arte.

The result is an entertaining, funny piece that shows how many of the themes, characters and scenes of classical theatre translate perfectly to our own time. It is suitable for all adult audiences, from the most seasoned theatregoer to the occasional visitor.

Hoidek Producciones presents The Argonauts, a production for young audiences based on the mythical epic told in Apollonius of Rhodes’ Argonautica and Robert Graves’ The Golden Fleece.

Heroes and tragic figures such as Jason, Medea and Heracles take the audience on a fabulous voyage in search of the Golden Fleece, a gift from the gods that gives mortals the strength and power to survive difficult times.

Like other epic tales such as The Odyssey and The Iliad, The Argonauts takes us into the history, myths, customs and worldview of ancient Greece, and into values that would profoundly shape our culture.

Hoidek’s stage version focuses on the story’s central elements through a dramatised account of the voyage and its protagonists. The production broadens young people’s understanding of the classical world and complements classroom learning in Ancient History, Art, Philosophy and Classical Literature. It also offers an opportunity to experience a text rooted in the origins of Western theatre.

Let Me Dream of You is a show created especially for children under the age of four.

Gesture and movement take centre stage, with very little text, allowing young children to follow the story through a language that feels familiar. The show explores the world of dreams through the eyes of a girl who is afraid to sleep.

The Little Shop of Horrors is based on Roger Corman’s cult film classic.

Its distinctive blend of horror and black comedy has attracted a devoted following since its release. Stage adaptations have usually taken the form of a musical. Hoidek set out to create a version faithful to the spirit of the original story while delving more deeply into the lives of its eccentric characters.

The result is a work filled with grotesque situations and the unsettling atmosphere of a B-movie tragicomedy.

This production is based on the well-known story by Luis Sepúlveda. It grew from a desire to bring to the stage a tale that reflects on how human beings care for the world around them.

Faithful to the author’s narrative, the adaptation brings out the novel’s dramatic possibilities through its variety of expressive languages. The result combines actors, puppets and audiovisual resources.

Marcela Can Do It is a theatre project developed by Hoidek Producciones during the 2017 Olite Classical Theatre Festival’s Laboratory Residency. It offers a modern rereading of the shepherdess Marcela episode in Don Quixote, regarded as one of the earliest feminist narratives in Spanish literature.

The project moves the story to the world of American women who took jobs in wartime factories during the Second World War while men fought at the front. It explores women’s emancipation and freedom, as well as their forced return to traditional roles after the war.

The piece was developed collectively, with dramaturgy, performance, set design, music and choreography in dialogue from the outset. The team called its method ‘forensic dramaturgy’: a form of creative reconstruction in which every element is researched and connected to uncover a common narrative thread.

The project also incorporated visual references, Lindy Hop choreography and music inspired by the 1940s, reinforcing the work’s historical and aesthetic relocation to the twentieth century.
